MKA have been asked to design a coastal retreat for busy photographer in a stunningly beautiful landscape on the north eastern edge of Iceland. The preliminary designs shown are for an unobtrusive structure that is embedded into the landscape. It has narrow slot windows to its long elevations giving glimpses to the east and west, and full height glazing to the north for views across the sea.
By orientating the structure north/south and opening up the roof, the pale white interior is flooded with soft diffuse northern light. At night the roof lights will make this an ideal place to enjoy the aurora borealis. The interior of the structure is full of light but externally the darkly clad building keeps a very low profile appearing to be a rocky outcrop or shadow on the side of the the hill from a distance.
